Based on a patient’s diagnosis and physical conditions, prosthetists will prescribe appropriate medical equipment or assistive tools that suit the patient’s living habits, work needs and self-care abilities.
Prosthetists-orthotists provide seating-related postural advice and assistive technology for people with various severity levels of neuromuscular diseases, for example, stroke, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and etc. These patients suffer from joint or spinal deformity which causes prolonged improper sitting posture. If such problems were remained untreated, the deformities would deteriorate, cause pain and pressure ulcers or even affect the respiratory functions. Through prescriptions and modification of suitable seating systems, it would provide sufficient protection and support to the affected bodies; hence, improve their functional mobility.
Prosthetists-orthotists would carefully consider and select the appropriate rehabilitative seating system and materials of assistive devices. Not only could it prevent body deformities and reduce postural-related back pain, but also prevent pressure ulcers by redistributing pressure evenly.
Provide back and sitting assessment or pressure- mapping assessment for those in need, and help patients understand their sitting postures, while offering suggestions for improvement.
Throughout the assessment, measurement, modelling, trial and follow-up stages of designing rehabilitation seating systems, prosthetists will actively involve and communicate with patients and their caregivers, so as to prescribe, design and produce suitable seating systems.
Prosthetists will recommend the most suitable wheelchair or walking aid according to a patient’s personal capacity and needs. Prosthetists will also design and produce different rehabilitation devices for patients, such as shower chairs, stands and feeding devices.
Prosthetists will visit communities, companies and institutions to conduct public education, exhibitions and talks to raise public awareness of healthy sitting and back care.
